Good news

  • The Cook Political Report adjusted the ratings for four Senate races in favor of Democrats.

  • On Tuesday, a federal judge in Indiana blocked a state law that banned university IDs as acceptable forms of voter identification.

  • A GoFundMe created to save Denver’s only lesbian bar has raised over $83,000.

  • Memphis’ Mason Temple, the historic Tennessee church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his final speech, is getting $1.2 million in federal funding for renovations as a civil rights landmark.

  • During a speech in Cameroon, Pope Leo criticized those who manipulate religion “for their own military, economic or political gain.” (On a related note, Vice President JD Vance thought it wise to lecture the Pope on Catholic theology. Yes, really.)

  • A federal judge in Oregon forcefully struck down RFK Jr.’s attempt to impose far-reaching restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors, ruling the policy unlawful and blocking its enforcement in the states that challenged it.

  • A Fairhope, AL municipal judge acquitted a No Kings protester who was arrested for wearing a giant inflatable penis costume. (Yay, bad taste is not against the law!)

  • John Eastman, the lawyer who spearheaded Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, has been disbarred in the state of California.

  • In a landmark ruling, the Montana Supreme Court has declared that the state constitution, one of the most progressive in the nation, entirely protects transgender people. The ruling is even insulated from SCOTUS decisions, due to how state constitutions work.

  • Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons will step down on May 31. The White House announced that Lori Chavez-Deremer, Secretary of Labor, will be leaving her job. (PLEASE let Kash Patel be next…)

  • Prosecutors in Hennepin County, MN have brought felony assault charges against an ICE agent who is accused of pointing a gun at another car in February. Minnesota authorities also announced a criminal investigation into the January 18 detention of ChongLy 'Scott' Thao as potential kidnapping, burglary, and false imprisonment by federal immigration agents.

  • In Chicago, every public school student can now use their student ID as a library card. What a great idea!

  • Canada has updated its legislation to allow for the seizure and transfer of profits generated from frozen Russian state assets to Ukraine.

  • Virginia has become the latest state to join a movement to make the winner of the popular vote the president.

  • The Texas Medical Board sanctioned three doctors for delayed care that led to the deaths of two pregnant women (this is only happening because of Pro Publica’s reporting. Please support them if you can!)

  • A federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s lawsuit against Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore that sought to force him to turn over private information about his state’s voters.

Things you can do right now

Oppose Budget Reconciliation to Refund ICE and Border Patrol.

By using Budget Reconciliation, the Senate can pass this bill with only 50 votes. However, Budget Reconciliation also means that every dollar given to ICE and BP must come from some other programs, most likely healthcare or other social safety net programs.

One Last Effort to Save Minnesota's Boundary Waters.

Although the Senate voted to allow mining around the Boundary Waters, you can contact Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources, which has the legal authority to block such mining.

  • Write or send a postcard to

    Commissioner Sarah Strommen
    Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
    500 Lafayette Road
    St. Paul, MN 55155

Ask her to protect the fragile ecosystem in the waters and allow no mining in National Park-protected lands.

  • Go to the Friends of the Boundary Waters website, where there is a link to send Commissioner Strommen an email, a phone number at which you can call her, and other resources to make your opinion known.

Continue Pressure on Section 702 of the FISA Act.

This allows wiretapping and data collection on foreign nationals on US soil—including information shared with or by American citizens—without a warrant or court order. The House and Senate passed a 10-day "clean" extension of this bill, while they try to get some reforms in the bill (against Trump's wishes.) Let your members of Congress know that you want these reforms.
